Farm and agricultural fencing

Keep cattle, goats and wild boar out of crops, and livestock in.

In shortFarm fencing is a boundary of wire mesh or barbed wire on posts that keeps stray cattle, goats and wild animals out of crops and holds livestock in. Most Indian farms use stay lock fence, chainlink or barbed wire on GI or concrete posts. Nitin Wire Group has made fencing in Chennai since 1975 and supplies small farmers as well as large plantations.

The problem

What you are protecting against

Stray cattle and goats

Grazing animals push through loose strands and gaps, and can flatten young crops in a single night.

Wild boar and burrowing animals

Wild boar root and push under a fence where it sits above the ground, so the bottom edge matters more than the height.

Long, uneven boundaries

Farm perimeters cross slopes, bunds and channels, so the fence has to hold tension over long runs and changing ground.

Rust from water and weather

Rain, irrigation and damp soil attack poorly coated wire, which then sags and snaps.

Planning

How to plan it

  1. Walk and measure the boundary

Measure the full perimeter and mark corners, gates, slopes and the points where water channels cross the line.

  2. Match the fence to the animal

Cattle need height and strength; goats, dogs and wild boar need a tight mesh near the ground. Decide what you are keeping out first.

  3. Protect the bottom edge

Where boar or burrowing animals are a problem, keep the mesh close to the ground or bury it slightly, and add a barbed strand along the base.

  4. Brace corners and gates

Corner, end and gate posts carry the tension of the whole run, so set them deeper and brace them before stretching the wire.

FAQ

Agriculture & Farming fencing: questions

Which fence is best to stop wild boar on a farm?

A strong mesh with a well-secured bottom edge works best, because wild boar push and dig under fences rather than jump them. Stay lock fence with narrow spacing near the ground, or chainlink with a barbed strand at the base, are common choices. Nitin Wire Group can advise on the right option for your terrain.

What is the cheapest fencing for agricultural land in India?

Barbed wire on posts is usually the lowest-cost way to mark and protect farmland, which is why it is widely used on large holdings. It deters cattle but does not stop small animals, so many farmers add mesh along the lower part of the boundary.

Stay lock fence or chainlink: which is better for a farm?

Stay lock fence suits long open runs and livestock, because its solid vertical stays keep the mesh rigid and tolerate wider post spacing. Chainlink gives a closed mesh that stops smaller animals and suits shorter boundaries around sheds, homesteads and orchards. Many farms use both.

What sizes does stay lock fence come in?

Nitin Wire Group lists stay lock fence in 4 ft x 66 ft and 5 ft x 66 ft rolls. It is heavy-duty galvanised, with solid vertical stay wires and graduated spacing that narrows towards the ground. Contact the sales team to confirm stock for your order.
